Learning through the creative and performing arts
The National Curriculum does not include a dedicated curriculum for dance and drama at Primary level. There is a dance unit in PE and drama could be seen as represented in the English curriculum but neither go far enough to drive the standards required to be successful in Key Stage 3. This means that pupils that enter in to Year 7 are more proficient at both music and art - which is something we want to redress.
Our fantastic creative team have developed something called LIPA Basics. It is a bespoke curriculum in acting, dance and performance/rehearsal skills for our Primary phase pupils. Lessons are weekly and are themed through whole year group projects that relate to their wider learning. We trialled the approach last year with our year 5 pupils and they loved the lessons which is why we have now rolled out to programme across the school.
We will be updating this page with medium term plans for every year group and photographs/videos of the lessons and their respective outcomes throughout the school year. For now we have provided below the provision maps for each of the core areas and an example of planning from year 2 and year 5.
